Vans set to be allowed into Birmingham’s Household Recycling Centres

From Thursday 2 July, Birmingham residents will be able to access the city’s network of Household Recycling Centres (HRCs) with trailers and vans.

Social distancing measures and a booking system remain in place. Those wishing to visit the HRCs with a trailer 6x4ft or smaller must be a Birmingham resident disposing of household waste and recycling and will need to book their visit via the online booking system.

Residents who wish to bring a large trailer (larger than 6x4ft) or a van will need to book a slot by calling the Van Booking Centre on 0203 567 3915 (Monday to Friday, from 8am-4pm).

The service is not yet available to businesses who would normally be able to book a visit for a fee.

Mark Powell, General Manager at Veolia, said: “We are delighted to offer residents wishing to visit with vans and trailers access to Birmingham’s HRCs.

“Residents are reminded to check the council’s website for details of how to book and the site rules. Social distancing measures are still in place to help prevent the spread of infection for their safety as well as our teams.”

Cllr John O’Shea, Cabinet Member for Street Scene and Parks at Birmingham City Council, said: “Since its launch, the booking system at our HRCs has been a big success and brought certainty to visits and eradicated the lengthy wait times that people were experiencing.

“Now we have reached a point at which that system is proven, we have worked with our partners at Veolia to look at how we can develop things further, so they get ever closer to normal. Re-opening the sites to more types of vehicles, including to those residents with vans and large trailers on a pre-booked basis, helps us get that little bit closer to where we were pre-lockdown.

“We will continue to look at how we can refine the system further in line with public health guidance to make sure as many people as possible can access our sites when they want to.”
