Susan May – Who Judges the Judges?

A criticism showing how the police investigation, forensic officers, and Crown Prosecution legal teams ‘targetted’ Susan May in 1992 manufacturing a case that resulted in her murder conviction.

In the year 2000 after Susan’s last failed appeal I,Geoff Goodwin,  along with the Friends of Susan May, was so appalled at the behaviour of the judges presiding that the question ‘Who judges the Judges?’ became a serious issue. From the first moment that appeal judge Lord Justice Kennedy opened his angry mouth we could see that Susan was not going to get a fair hearing. And so it was. He showed her no kindness throughout, even taking over five weeks after the hearing in court before calling her back to hear him pronounce the failure of the appeal. Judge came into court sat down, said the ”Appeal is Dismissed’, they were is only words and he rose and walked out of court. Leaving Susan in tears and the courtroom packed to the rafters in total disarray. Five weeks of agony and suspense in prison before hearing she was not to be released.

From the first moves to bring an appeal against the trial verdict in May 1993, we were counselled not to criticise anyone. And so we did not. But now, as the Criminal Cases Review Commission have ceased their investigations and have closed the file on Susan’s case, it must be time to criticise.
