Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan

BEIJING, April 28 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan in Beijing on Sunday.

“Pakistan is China’s all-weather strategic cooperative partner. China and Pakistan are ‘iron friends’ and have always firmly supported each other on issues concerning each other’s core interests,” Xi said, adding that China takes Pakistan as a priority in its diplomacy.

No matter how international and regional situations change, China firmly supports Pakistan in safeguarding its sovereignty and national dignity, choosing its own development path suited to its national conditions, combating terrorist and extremist forces, striving for a sound external security environment, and playing a constructive role in international and regional affairs, Xi said.

Major progress has been made in bilateral cooperation in the construction of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, finance, trade and other aspects, Xi said.

“In the next stage, China and Pakistan should make more efforts to advance the all-weather strategic cooperation,” Xi said, calling on both sides to deepen high-level contacts and mutual support, strengthen strategic communication, and promote high-quality cooperation in production capacity, infrastructure construction, people’s livelihood and trade within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor has played an important role in Pakistan’s economic development and the improvement of people’s lives, Imran Khan said, believing more and more countries will support and participate in the cooperation under the BRI.

Pakistan is willing to consolidate its traditional friendship with China, deepen pragmatic cooperation, and enhance communication and coordination with China in multilateral affairs, said the prime minister.

The two sides also exchanged views on the situations in South Asia. Xi expressed the hope that Pakistan and India can meet each other halfway and promote the stabilization and improvement of Pakistan-India relations.

l  Commentary: Upcoming Beijing horticultural expo opens door to greener future

BEIJING, April 27 (Xinhua) — The upcoming 2019 Beijing International Horticultural Exhibition is slated to open on Monday at the foot of the Great Wall in the Chinese capital’s Yanqing district.

As visitors around the world will soon have the chance to witness the harmony between humans and nature, the expo will also serve as a platform for promoting green development and building a community with a shared future for humankind.

The expo, themed “Live Green, Live Better,” will introduce to the world a green, innovative and harmonious China. More than 110 countries and international organizations will attend the expo, opening a new chapter in the expo’s history with the highest attendance.

Apart from guests abroad, over 120 non-official exhibitors from China, including 17 Chinese enterprises, will also present their latest achievements in the 503-hectare expo site, unveiling a beautiful China whose people are always working for a better life.

“Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets,” says a Chinese saying. Indeed, the expo will showcase China’s endeavor to develop an ecological civilization.

China has been pushing the whole society onto a path to civilized development featuring the growth of production, an affluent life and a sound ecosystem, and has been making great contributions to global ecological security through effective environment protection.

By actively taking part in the effort to address climate change issues, meeting the target to reduce carbon intensity by 40-45 percent by 2020, three years ahead of schedule, and approving more than 30 conventions and protocols regarding ecology and environment, China has become a key participant and contributor in global environmental governance.

The 162-day expo, with over 2,500 events, is poised to impress an estimate of 16 million visitors from China and abroad with a huge collection of plants, flowers and eye-catching pavilions.

The event will show that different governments and peoples across borders all see afforestation as the common way to fulfil a wonderful life, and have reached consensus on protecting the ecosystem through green development.

“We all live under the same sun. We all walk under the same moon,” wrote a famous song lyric. In fact, different ecological environments are interdependent and interactive, and humans and nature are never apart. To build a community with a shared future for humankind, all countries need to join hands and share their experience in protecting the environment and advancing sustainable development.

The 2019 Beijing expo, by crafting a garden of flowers, portrays the interaction between and the combination of the art of gardening and different cultures, the exchanges between humans and nature, the harmony between environment protection, innovation and development, and the dialogue between China and the world.

The gathering will facilitate the implementation of such new development concepts as innovation, coordination, green development, openness and sharing, help incorporate green strategies into the Belt and Road Initiative, encourage all countries to embrace openness and cooperation, push for jointly building a green homeland, and draw a fine blueprint of a shared future.
