Plan ahead for Primark store opening and big weekend in Birmingham

Shoppers are being advised to plan ahead and leave more time for their journeys as a number of big events are set to take place in Birmingham city centre this weekend

It is anticipated people from all over the country will visit Primark’s flagship store during opening weekend which also coincides with a book signing by Love Island winner Dani Dyer, at Waterstones.

With both events taking place during the first weekend of the school Easter holidays, alongside Aston Villa playing at home and a Bhangra event at Birmingham Arena, advice from transport bosses is to plan ahead to arrive in plenty of time.

Key travel advice:

Plan ahead and leave more time for your journey: Primark will be quietest when it first opens at 8 am, so consider coming into Birmingham earlier in the day to get the store to yourself

  • Be patient and expect to queue: Birmingham New Street, Birmingham Moor Street and surrounding areas are likely to be very busy.
  • Use public transport wherever possible: to reduce congestion in the city centre.
  • The car parks closest to the city centre will be the busiest but there are lots of car parks a short walk from the High Street, view them here.

Anne Shaw, director of network resilience, Transport for West Midlands said: “We are expecting lots of extra visitors to our region this weekend so we’re asking people think about their journeys and leave more time to make sure they have an enjoyable and stress-free day.

“There are over 8,000 free Park and Ride spaces at stations across the West Midlands so please consider public transport whenever possible and if you are coming into the city to do some shopping, consider starting earlier when stores are generally quieter.

“Whatever you have planned for the beginning of the Easter holidays, planning head will help you make the most of your day.”
