Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games opens first wave of recruitment

The first wave of job opportunities for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will go live today, 24 August, offering committed and talented jobseekers the chance to be part of history and contribute their passion and skills to Birmingham’s largest ever cultural and sporting event.

The jobs advertised include operational and management roles in Finance, HR and Administration that will help put the teams and systems in place to ensure the successful staging of an inspiring and inclusive Games, delivered on time and on budget.

John Crabtree, the Chair of the Organising Committee for Birmingham 2022 said:

“This is an exciting time for the Games Partners as we begin the process of building the team that will support and lead a truly transformational moment in the history of Birmingham and the West Midlands.

Over the next four years we will recruit over 1,000 people to deliver the Games, providing important employment and economic benefits to the region and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for jobseekers and professionals at all levels.

We want a team that represents all the communities, talent and pride of the city, region and host nation – as well as showcase our ambitious, dynamic city to attract new candidates to the area. Successful candidates will be the first permanent staff members of the newly-created Organising Committee for Birmingham 2022. The Chair of the Board was appointed in July; an interim CEO, Ian Reid, is currently in post and the recruitment process for a permanent

Chief Executive is underway. Interviews for the first roles will take place in September, and whilst some specialist senior jobs will require Games expertise, the vast majority of opportunities will focus on skills, experience and values.

Ian Reid, Interim Chief Executive for Birmingham 2022 said:

“Many of the operational roles advertised in this first phase do not require Games experience, so we hope as many people as possible put their hand up. Being on the journey from the very beginning is a particularly rewarding experience, so I hope we can attract some special candidates who can make their mark on Birmingham’s largest ever sporting and cultural event”.

The Commonwealth Games will be held from 27 July to 7 August 2022, bringing up to 6500 athletes and team officials from 71 nations and territories to Birmingham and the West Midlands. With four years to go, current preparations include strategic planning, venue planning, recruitment, budget forecasting, early transport modelling and the start of a procurement programme which – in keeping with previous Games – will see valuable contracts and opportunities extended to companies based locally, regionally and beyond.
